Minnesota Uroliths Center- Cystine Urolith Data From 2000-2006

*A total of 1928 cystine stones were analyzed from over ninety dog breeds at the Minnesota Uroliths Center from 2000-2006.
Of those samples, Mastiffs were one of the more commonly affected breeds submitting 6 % (six percent) of the samples.

Are we seeing an increase in Mastiffs affected with Cystinuria?

No. Of the data collected on Mastiffs that have been Cystinuria tested using the Nitroprusside Urine Screening Test since 1998 at the University of Pennsylvania’s Metabolic Lab, approximately 10% of the males are testing positive.

This number has remained fairly consistent over the past 10 years and it is very important that we continue testing our Mastiffs and avoid breeding the affected dogs to help keep the disease from spreading throughout our Mastiff gene pool.
